Sydney based and Wellington born artist Lauren Day has dropped some major vibey tracks in 2020 that we just can’t get enough of. The first of the two, Get To You, is our SS20/21 go to track. It is just effortlessly energetic and fuelled by snappy vocals and killer beat. It instantly transcends you to a Mediterranean beach club. Her more recent 2020 release, Seeing You Again, is a dash of melancholic realness paired with dreamy pop instrumentals and depicts the frustrations of living under restrictions. This song was definitely played a few times praying for Melbourne lockdown to end.

The singer-songwriter really shows off her diversity in vocal ability and style with the music she has released so far. She can serve you an upbeat summer rooftop bar moment, a rainy day staring out the window moment or even just your classic working from home moment. She does it all.

One interesting thing discussed with Lauren was the recent emergence of Tik-Tok and how it’s embracing music right now. A song could go viral at the drop of a hat and it’s an exciting platform to get experimental with.

We caught up with Lauren Day to chat about her recent releases, what needs to change in the Aus and NZ music scene and some awkward moments.

Check out our chat below:

How did you get into music?

My first proper step into the industry was meeting a manager of another artist in Wellington when I was 19. He got me into the studio a we recorder a cover of Fever by Peggy Lee as an audition and signed me to a management deal. It ended up falling through as he had to suddenly move back to Sydney but that was the pivotal moment that really put my foot in the door. I had wanted to make music from a young age so once that happened it was all just little steps to get me to where I am today.

What do you find to be the easiest or most enjoyable topic to write about?

I used to write a lot about negative relationships which I guess was kind of therapeutic haha. Now I’m really enjoying writing about Summer and love which you’ll hear in more up coming music and my song Seeing you again. All these song were written really quickly and easily. I’m obsessed with that summer vibe haha.

What made you move from NZ to Sydney?

My music was my driving point. I had tried to start a couple of bands but the music scene in Wellington is very small and I just couldn’t get anything off the ground and there weren’t many live music venues, maybe 1 haha. Moving to Sydney was the best thing I could have done for my music!

Holy Moly Get To You is a banger of track, can you tell us a little bit about it?

Haha thank you! Its funny I actually wrote this topline for another producer from The UK and he didn’t like it. I had worked with Alex Preston on Cold Nights so I sent it to him and he loved it and finished it in a couple of days! The lyrics are about having a dream about a being with a celebrity crush! And waking up and it’s not real! Hahaha

I’ve seen you’ve taken to Tik-Tok with your music, do you think that’s a platform that has a bit of untapped potential?

Yeah I think Tik-Tok is great and there is definitely a lot of potential for artists to get their music out to a wider audience through it. I’m quite new to it so just trying to navigate what the best way for me to present my music on there is.

What’s something that needs to change in the Aus and NZ music scene?

Hmmm I think one thing would be affordable support . As artists your income is usually pretty low so releasing music is hard to do if you don’t have the budget. There are always grants and things you can apply for but they’re far and few and so many people apply the likelihood of getting one is low. Maybe more mentorship programs as well.

What would a ‘Lauren Day’ perfume smell like and what would you name it?

It would smell like a field of flowers in spring with some citrus notes and I’d call it Day Dreams by Lauren Day haha.

What’s one of the most awkward situations that you’ve been in that you now look back on and laugh at?

Theres been a few haha one of the most would be at Secret Garden Festival I was in the poet tent and there was a Mic so I got up and started to sing Blue Jeans by Lana Del Rey then realised I was too drunk to remember the words and apologised to the crowd by saying sorry Ive forgotten the words I’m too drunk. My friends and I laugh about that specific memory a lot haha.

What’re your music plans for the rest of the year?

I have 3 new songs that are all finished so just getting them ready for their release. I’m in the middle of planning 2 music videos and also working on writing new music as well which is exciting. Planning to release a single followed by an EP early next year! I originally wanted to release it all before the end of this year but with COVID have decided to hold off.

Wow I wish I was at Secret Garden to watch the beautiful fail haha also totally agree with the affordable support for musicians. Watch this space because we are going to help in every way we can.

Check out  her new tracks below or head to our Picnics, Parks & Pinot Gris👒 playlist to hear some more vibey songs.
